Tambopata Express: The Ultimate Short Jungle Getaway

Short on time but hungry for adventure? Experience the magic of the Amazon Rainforest in just 2 days with Mega Travel Machupicchu. This express expedition takes you deep into the Tambopata National Reserve to explore the famous Lake Sandoval, home to the endangered Giant River Otters and Black Caimans. Navigate the Madre de Dios River, sleep in an eco-lodge surrounded by the jungle symphony, and discover exotic wildlife. It is the perfect add-on to your Cusco trip for travelers who want a quick but immersive taste of the Amazon.

Your adventure begins upon your arrival at Puerto Maldonado Airport (PEM), where our team will welcome you. We will transfer you to the port to board a motorized canoe for a scenic ride down the Madre de Dios River. Keep your camera ready to spot turtles, herons, and capybaras on the riverbanks.

We arrive at our Eco-Lodge for a welcome drink and a delicious lunch featuring local ingredients (like "Juane" or river fish). In the afternoon, we may take a short introductory hike to learn about medicinal plants or visit Monkey Island (depending on lodge location) to spot Capuchins and Squirrel Monkeys.

As night falls, we embark on a Caiman Safari. We will navigate the river by boat using spotlights to find the glowing red eyes of White and Black Caimans lurking in the water. We will also search for nocturnal creatures like capybaras and nightjars before returning to the lodge for dinner.

We wake up early with the sounds of the jungle! After a coffee, we head straight to the Tambopata National Reserve checkpoint. We will hike about 3km (1.8 miles) through the rainforest to reach the majestic Lake Sandoval. We will paddle across the lake in wooden canoes (no motors allowed) to search for the famous Giant River Otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), which hunt fish in families. We can also spot Red Howler Monkeys, macaws, and the prehistoric Shansho bird (Hoatzin).

After this incredible experience, we return to the lodge for a full breakfast. If time permits, we can do a quick Canopy Walk or visit a small parrot clay lick. Finally, we pack our bags and take the boat back to Puerto Maldonado. Our transport will transfer you to the airport in time for your flight back to Cusco or Lima.
