Manu Biosphere Reserve 5D/4N: Deep Jungle & Wildlife Immersion

Escape civilization and journey into the lungs of the world with Mega Travel Machupicchu. This 5-Day Manu Expedition takes you from the high Andes down to the lush Amazon basin. You will traverse the mysterious Cloud Forest, navigate the Alto Madre de Dios River by boat, and sleep in traditional eco-lodges surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. Witness the “Cock of the Rock” (Peru’s national bird), visit the famous Parrot Clay Lick, explore the Machuwasi Lake on rafts, and spot monkeys, caimans, and endless bird species. This is the perfect introduction to the Amazon for nature lovers and photographers.

Our expedition begins at 05:00 a.m. with a pickup from your hotel in our private overland transport. We travel through the colonial town of Paucartambo, the gateway to the jungle. We ascend to the Acjanaco Pass (3,560m), the entrance to Manu National Park, where we begin our descent into the Cloud Forest. This misty ecosystem is filled with orchids, ferns, and moss. Here, we will stop to observe the ritual dance of the Cock of the Rock (Rupicola Peruviana) and hopefully spot the spectacled bear. In the afternoon, we arrive at the town of Pilcopata (approx. 600m) to check into our first lodge and enjoy dinner.

After breakfast, we continue by bus to Atalaya Port, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River. Here, we switch to a motorized boat to journey deeper into the rainforest. Along the riverbanks, you might spot herons, vultures, and capybaras (the world's largest rodent). We arrive at our Eco-Lodge in the heart of the jungle for lunch. In the afternoon, we explore Machuwasi Lake on traditional balsa rafts. This serene lake is home to the prehistoric Hoatzin bird (Shansho), monkeys, and caimans. We finish the day with a Night Walk to spot spiders, snakes, and tree frogs before dinner.

We wake up before dawn to visit a Parrot Clay Lick. From a hidden blind, we will watch dozens of parrots and parakeets descend to eat the nutrient-rich clay—a loud and colorful spectacle essential for birdwatchers. After returning to the lodge for breakfast, we venture out for a deeper hike into the primary forest. Your expert guide will explain the medicinal plants used by locals and lead you to the Giant Ceiba Trees, the ancient giants of the Amazon. We will look for various monkey species, including Squirrel Monkeys, Capuchins, and Howler Monkeys. The evening is free to relax in the hammocks and listen to the jungle symphony.

Today involves more river exploration. After breakfast, we take the boat to visit the Shintuya Hot Springs. These natural thermal waters are located right in the jungle, allowing you to relax while surrounded by nature. We may also visit a local native community (depending on availability/season) to learn about their lifestyle, hunting techniques, and traditions. We return to the lodge (or a different lodge closer to the port, depending on logistics) for our final dinner and a farewell toast with our crew.

On our final morning, we enjoy a last jungle breakfast before boarding the boat back to Atalaya Port. Our private bus will be waiting to take us back up through the Cloud Forest. We will make brief stops to stretch our legs and take final photos of the misty mountains. We arrive back in Cusco around 05:00 p.m. – 06:00 p.m., dropping you off at your hotel.
