The Moche Route: Archaeology, Gold & Northern Sun

Discover the “other side” of Peru with Mega Travel Machupicchu. While the south has the Incas, the North holds the secrets of the Moche and Chimu civilizations—masters of gold, pottery, and adobe architecture. This 5-Day Northern Circuit takes you from the immense adobe city of Chan Chan in Trujillo to the royal treasures of the Lord of Sipan in Chiclayo, finally arriving in the sunny land of Piura. Experience the best northern gastronomy, explore pyramids older than the Incas, and visit the famous artisan town of Catacaos.

Welcome to the "City of Eternal Spring"! We will pick you up from the Trujillo airport or bus station and transfer you to your hotel. In the afternoon, we visit the awe-inspiring Chan Chan, the largest adobe city in ancient America and capital of the Chimu Kingdom. We will explore the Nik An palace with its ceremonial plazas and friezes. We finish the day at the traditional fishing village of Huanchaco. Here, you will see the "Caballitos de Totora" (reed watercraft), used by local fishermen for over 3,000 years. Enjoy the sunset by the ocean before returning to the hotel.

We continue ascending to Patahuasi to drink coca tea (to help with altitude) and observe curious rock formations. We reach the highest point of the trip, the Patapampa Viewpoint of the Volcanoes (4,910m / 16,108ft), where you can see the Ampato and Sabancaya volcanoes.

We then descend into the town of Chivay (the capital of the canyon) for a delicious buffet lunch. After checking into your hotel, you have the afternoon free. We highly recommend visiting the La Calera Hot Springs (thermal waters) to relax your muscles in the warm volcanic pools under the open sky. In the evening, you can enjoy a dinner with a traditional folk dance show.

After breakfast, we explore the Moche culture at the Huacas del Sol y La Luna (Temples of the Sun and Moon). You will be amazed by the incredibly preserved multicolored friezes depicting Moche gods and rituals. We also visit the on-site museum to see ceramics and artifacts. In the afternoon, we board a comfortable tourist bus (or private transport) for the 3.5-hour journey north to the city of Chiclayo. Upon arrival, we transfer you to your hotel to rest.

Today we visit the highlight of the north: The Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum. Known as the "King Tut of the Americas," this museum houses the incredible gold, silver, and jewel treasures found in the tomb of the Lord of Sipán. It is considered one of the best museums in South America. Afterward, we head to the Valley of the Pyramids in Túcume. We will visit the ceremonial center featuring 26 adobe pyramids and hike up to the "Purgatorio" viewpoint for a panoramic view of the valley and dry forest. We return to Chiclayo for the night.

We leave Chiclayo early and head further north across the Sechura Desert towards the region of Piura (approx. 3-4 hours). Our destination is the charming town of Catacaos, famous across Peru for its skilled artisans. We will visit the craft market where you can see (and buy) exquisite gold and silver filigree jewelry and fine straw hats (Sombreros de Paja Toquilla). We will also enjoy a traditional northern lunch (Piura is famous for its "Ceviche" and "Seco de Chabelo") before transferring to your hotel in Piura City.

On your final day, enjoy a relaxed breakfast. Depending on your flight schedule, we will transfer you to the Piura Airport (CAP) for your flight back to Lima. (Note: If you plan to extend your trip to the beaches of Mancora or Vichayito, we can arrange a private transfer from Piura to the beach for an extra cost).
